About

As one of Australia's leading health companies, Medibank supports the health and wellbeing of more than 4.2 million customers The Medibank and ahm (Australian Health Management) brands deliver care to millions of people across the country through its Amplar Health network.

To deliver on that care, Medibank's engineering team has adopted an API-first approach to product development and integration. This lays the foundation for faster delivery, better collaboration, and a more connected digital healthcare experience for customers.

Integral to Medibank achieving its 2030 vision to deliver the best health and wellbeing for Australia, it is developing its digital strategy, with APIs at the core of this. APIs build interoperability and capabilities that enable digital expansion and third-party integration.

The Story

Due to legacy systems, the delivery phase had bottlenecks which needed the right tools to unblock and speed up delivery execution for the engineering teams.

With its modern integration platform, Medibank adopted an API-first approach for digital expansion, which prioritised a contract-first approach to software development.

I didn't need training to use Postman as it's already part of my daily workflow. When something breaks, I can see it, fix it, and move on quickly.

Ankita Jain, API Developer, Medibank

After a short proof of concept, the engineering team selected Postman as their standard across development and QA. While Postman was already used for local validation, the engineering team chose it for collaboration features, CI/CD integration, and built-in governance. Postman's data protection features aligned with Medibank's priorities. The goal was to replace scattered frameworks, manual workflows, and a complex custom-built test automation framework with something maintainable, transparent, and repeatable.

Medibank's shift-left initiative plays a key role in this transformation. It aims to move testing earlier in the development process and embed quality into daily engineering work. Postman helps to enable this with contract-based testing, allowing better collaboration, visibility, and CI/CD automation.

Postman has helped us make shift-left real. Test coverage and code are embedded in CI/CD, enabling both developers and testers to collaborate and run the single test collections.

Prabhu Nataraj, Senior Automation Specialist, Medibank

During the API design phase, feedback is collected from teams across the business to finalise the API contracts. Tests are then created by importing the API contracts directly into Postman.

The contract serves as a blueprint, outlining API endpoints, data structures, request/response formats, and other essential details that are clearly visible in Postman. Linting features enable alignment with Open API specifications and ensure governance is built from the start. Shared test collections are embedded directly into CI/CD pipelines, running automatically as part of every build.

As services are being built, when something fails, developers can see it immediately and fix it themselves, without waiting for QA. That tighter feedback loop saves time, reduces handoffs, and helps catch issues long before production.

To keep Postman Collections aligned with the codebase, Medibank recently introduced Postman's GitHub integration. Collections now link to GitHub, which allows tests to be branched and reviewed alongside code. Additionally, there is a collaborative review through pull requests.

Postman is user-friendly and designed for team collaboration. Its governance and security features are important to us for data protection, and the GitHub integration is a welcome addition.

Dakshna Rajendaran, Principal Engineer, Medibank

For external collaboration, the engineering team standardised on Postman's Partner Workspaces. The engineering team can now onboard partners into shared environments with managed collections, environment variables, and documentation. Workspaces are the standard way to share sample requests and responses.

Shared collections and version control have completely changed how we collaborate, both internally and with partners.

Mathangi Vijayshankar, Engineering Manager, Medibank

To support stronger security and governance, the engineering team introduced a persistent penetration test collection that enables a much easier way to keep APIs up to date.

The Postman API Platform is now the foundation for a more collaborative approach encompassing design, standardisation, governance and quality. Using the platform, developers and testers have shared tools, enabling them to collaborate easily and get faster feedback increasing confidence in software code quality.

The Outcome

The most impactful result of selecting Postman has been that quality is now embedded in Medibank's developers' everyday workflow.

Postman reduced our testing cycle times by 70% and accelerated feature releases by three weeks, along with providing one of the best customer experiences I've ever had.

Sathyakhala Anantharajan, Head of IT Applications, Medibank

Automated Postman tests run in CI/CD pipelines, giving developers instant feedback. Testing cycle times have been reduced by 70% which has sped up feature releases by three weeks.

Failures are surfaced early, fixed independently, and rarely require QA intervention. Flows are being explored to interconnect multiple APIs and streamline user journeys.

Postman Collections are versioned in GitHub and reviewed through pull requests, keeping test coverage aligned with the codebase. That shift has improved consistency, reduced regressions, and enabled confidence in changes, even to complex services.

Partner collaboration has also become faster and more scalable. Using workspaces, Medibank can onboard external teams without messy email threads or bespoke handovers.

We have full API test coverage and complete visibility. The confidence our developers have in every single service they build is the true success of our shift-left journey.

Sathyakhala Anantharajan, Head of IT Applications, Medibank

With Postman, Medibank's engineering teams have strengthened cross-team collaboration with API and integration teams to build repeatable, transparent automation that helps to boost confidence across the organisation.
