About

As a leading Canadian commerce solutions provider, Moneris, empowers businesses with innovative solutions for mobile, online and in-store commerce, as well as data-driven insights, value-added services and on-site support.

Moneris processes one in three transactions across Canada, serving businesses of every industry and size, from start-ups to enterprises, and delivering integrated tools that help businesses grow.

Moneris' customers and partners have varying payment integration needs in relation to their commerce solutions. Ease of access and use for Moneris' APIs is critical to ensure support for everyone from customers' development teams to independent software vendors (ISVs) and integrators.

These new APIs are at the forefront of Moneris' new backend service. They enable processes, including purchases and pre-authorizations, and provide fraud prevention tools. APIs deliver functionality across a payment's lifecycle and other Moneris services.

The Postman API Platform's unified API gateway simplifies access for developers and helps provide an elevated developer experience as businesses integrate into Moneris' solutions. Postman is used for governance, API cataloging, automated testing and the Moneris public workspace.

The Challenge

Initially, internal collaboration presented an opportunity for improvement. Rather than a unified API strategy, teams had independent workflows. For instance, some teams used documentation hosted in a GitHub repo, while others used SDKs (software development kits) and developer tools. This decentralized approach highlighted the need for a streamlined API solution.

Each internal development team brought its strengths and best practices to the table, which reflected a strong culture of autonomy and innovation. However, this independence sometimes led to misalignment and delays, which impacted the creation of a Center of Excellence.

Moneris offered a range of well-functioning APIs, each tailored to specific use cases. However, variations in integration approaches sometimes led to inconsistencies for external developers.

At the time, API distribution and discoverability lacked consistency. While some Moneris APIs, such as XML APIs, were accessible through the developer portal, developers still needed to download an SDK from GitHub to build integrations. Additionally, there was no streamlined way to test the API, and no public collection was available. These gaps highlighted opportunities to create a more unified developer experience and to improve accessibility with an API-first approach that encompassed API governance, API strategy and API consolidation.

The Solution

The Postman Enterprise plan has enabled standardized API and integration processes. Postman's ease of use, rich features, and self-service capabilities have significantly enhanced merchants' developer experience, especially in the Moneris developer portal.

We're welcoming our users to a platform they love. And the frictionless developer experience makes them stay.

Tom Sitkiewicz, Director, Product Strategy and Data Solutions, Moneris

Internal API management practices have been transformed. With speed and built-in governance, it's now possible to move from design to build in one fluid workflow on Postman. Every team has a team workspace governed by permissions and role-based access control (RBAC) integrated with Moneris' own Identity Provider. APIs are published internally in the workspace, and then, in collaboration with an API Architect, the team can submit a request to publish on the Moneris Private API Network. All Moneris employees using Postman have access to its Private API Network.

Moneris recognized that the most significant market disruptors make everything available to developers. API discoverability is essential to innovation. The Moneris Private API Network was used as a blueprint to refine the Moneris public workspace on the Postman API Network.

The Moneris Unified API building practices supported by Postman have made consuming the Moneris API effortless and expedited the time to first call (TTFC).

Sign-up has also been streamlined. Developers immediately receive access to credentials after signing up for the developer portal. There's no need to scroll or search because the Run In Postman button goes straight to the Moneris public workspace. After completing EasyAuth and entering the client ID, the developer can get started.

Postman makes it easy to get started. The most important metric, time to first call, has been expedited by at least 10x, maybe more.

Once the credentials have been obtained, an SDK can be generated. An SDK can also be built from a Postman Collection. The buttons in the collection provide the code for the API call.

Postman is the single, secure platform that has enabled Moneris to design APIs with speed and built-in governance. Now, it's easy to identify issues that need fixing quickly. For example, if a team is coding their API spec, Postman will pinpoint any inconsistencies with the API guide. While automated API tests created using Postman validate all aspects of API delivery, from implementation to contracts to release pipelines.

Postman Flows provide a clear end-to-end view of integrations, showcasing best practice use cases. With Flows, developers can present their integrations to business users without diving into granular details. This is especially useful for merchants when introducing new solutions for approval and buy-in. Canadian fintech businesses need to adhere to stringent regulations. Developers need both technical acumen and a complete understanding of the rigid Canadian financial terminology, which Flows solves for.

Postman Flows provide a visual diagram that is extremely valuable when presenting a developer's work to leaders, or when showcasing end-to-end integrations to the community.

Postman means it is easier to discover Moneris APIs through the Postman API Network and to understand how they work using Flows.

The Outcome

Moneris has seen Postman contribute to exponential API adoption. The time to first call is at least 10x faster than before.

Previously, it could take a developer some time to move from the sandbox environment to production. Now, it takes only one or two days to make the first production call, and Moneris does not need to provide support.

The Moneris public workspace has seen a 90% increase in API calls from the last quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025, with only a 3% rise in 4XX errors. There was also an uptick in watchers, and the number of forks has increased significantly. Since joining the Postman API Network and optimizing the workspace, the number of forks that took six months to achieve in 2024 has only taken two months in 2025.

Developers are registering and making their first API call shortly after. User registration has increased by 225.2% in the first quarter of 2025.

Postman has helped elevate Moneris' developer experience, which has resulted in greater developer activity.
